You'll read articles from different people claiming this skill or that skill are the most important. In my opinion, they're all important. The key is the meaning of the word skill. According to Webster's dictionary the definition of skill is "a learned power of doing something competently: a developed aptitude or ability." My definition is something that's been mastered, that you do without thought.
In order to master sales skills you need to first pick the ones that fit with your style. Second, they need to be practiced and internalized until they flow. Third, only after they've been practiced outside the sales arena can you take them and test them in the field on real live prospects.
Don't take learning sales skills lightly. It was only after I'd mastered sales skills that I became a great sales person, because I didn't have to think about what I was going to say. I could focus on the prospect and what they were saying, both verbally and nonverbally. Those are the selling skills that will put you in the top 5% of sales people.
